Wood Ave. Fire (Bridgeport, CT) 2/1/08
BRIDGEPORT, CT – Shortly before 2am on February 1, 2008, the Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched to 116 Wood Avenue for a reported house fire. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire showing from the 1st floor B-side of a 2 ½ wood frame extending up to the 2nd floor. There were several reports of people trapped on the 3rd floor of the residence. Fast acting members of Bridgeport’s Ladder 11 quickly rescued all three people that were unaccounted for. Lieutenant Joe Southard found a 9 year old boy and handed him out a window to Firefighter Mike Kaczegowicz, while Firefighter Dave Diaz rescued the mother and the 11-month-old baby sister of the boy. A small lhasa apso dog was also rescued from the fire. The three family members were checked out at Bridgeport Hospital and later released. In all, two families were displaced by the fire, and the Red Cross is accepting donations for them at 1-800-319-9935.
