Chapel St. 2nd Alarm (New Haven, CT) 12/25/19
NEW HAVEN, CT - At approximately 8:00am on Christmas morning 2019, the New Haven Fire Department was dispatched to 1303 Chapel Street for a house fire. Companies responding to the scene reported “they could see it” while en route. First companies on scene found the historic former ‘Water Camp’ home, a large 3-story wood frame Victorian, with heavy smoke and fire showing from the top floor. Members performed an aggressive interior attack, but were forced out due to rapidly deteriorating conditions throughout the vacant house. A second alarm was called and operations turned defensive. It took approximately 2 hours to put the fire under control, and no injuries were reported. Further updates to this story found that the home, built in 1900 and one-time home of Walter Camp, the “Father of American Football”, was recently purchased and was under renovation. The fire is now being deemed suspicious and under investigation by both New Haven Fire and New Haven PD.
